Shad Fish

Shad are a forage fish species used to maintain gamefish populations, much like minnows. Shad are a great addition to an ecosystem as they contribute to the variety of forage fish available to predators.

Gizzard shad and Threadfin shad are both common in areas of running water, such as rivers and reservoirs. Due to their small size, larger fish such as Bass, Crappie, and Catfish use shad as a primary food source. Shad can also be raised and used for baiting purposes. Shad reproduce quickly, but tend to be fragile. Threadfin shad are smaller than Gizzard shad, and thus are a better option to stock as forage fish. Gizzard shad are typically larger. Here at Henneke’s, we primarily stock Threadfin.

Shad sales are done by pre-order only, and are only available for a limited amount of time every Spring. If you are looking to stock your pond or lake with Threadfin Shad, it is important to get on the books early to reserve your spot!
