The Most Common Types of Minnows

A small fish typically used as bait, minnows can be a wonderful addition to your pond. They have a high tolerance to virtually any kind of water quality, which is why they’re commonly found in streams, rivers, and lakes. However, there is more than just one type of minnows. There are several that can be commonly found in the wild and raised in ponds. Read on to learn more:

Fatheads

Despite the name, fathead minnows are not actually fat. They get their name from the black, fleshy pad that appears on the top of males’ heads during the breeding season. Overall, fatheads can range from silver to a dark-olive color, with a paler underbelly and two dark stripes along their sides. These fish are incredibly sturdy creatures, able to withstand various temperatures, pH levels, and oxygen levels.

Rosy Reds

Named for their reddish colors, rosy reds stand out from the crowd. They love open spaces and can be a beautiful addition to your pond. Rosy reds can reach up to 2 to 3 inches in length when properly cared for, though some can be smaller if they were raised in unhealthy conditions.

White Cloud Mountain Minnows

Finally, there are white cloud mountain minnows. They’re rare in the wild but more popular when raised in ponds or fish tanks. These minnows are smaller than fatheads and rosy reds, only growing to be about 1.5 inches in length. You can spot white cloud mountain minnows thanks to their bright red caudal or tail fins.
