Bluegill & Sunfish

fish

Coppernose Bluegill and Redear Sunfish are two crucial forage fish species we carry here at Henneke Fish Hatchery. These fish contribute to the food chain in a pond and serve as additional bait for gamefish.

Coppernose Bluegill are a very prolific fish that are essential to BassCrappie, and Catfish ponds. The Coppernose Bluegill is exceptionally adapted to hot temperatures, and thrives in regions of Texas where other bluegill species would not.

Redear Sunfish are stocked for the overall health of Bass-focused ponds. Redear Sunfish feed on crustaceans, snails, and parasitic species that may ail Largemouth and Hybrid Striped Bass. Their reproduction is slightly less than that of the Coppernose Bluegill, but they are important species to have in a pond or lake.

Many young anglers find both Redear Sunfish and Coppernose Bluegill to be a worthy catch. Typically growing to about hand-size and 0.5-1.5 pounds, large adults also serve as a fishing opportunity as well.

We also carry Hybrid Perch, which is a cross between a Bluegill and a Green Sunfish. These fish have very limited reproduction, but do not lack in heart. Hyper-aggressive and always hungry, these guys are a great option for the primary gamefish of small ponds fished frequently by young anglers.
