Minnows

fish

We carry the two main species of forage minnows here at Henneke Hatchery, the Fathead Minnow and the Golden Shiner. Minnows are an important food source for many freshwater gamefish that are popular in Texas, such as BassCrappie, and Catfish.

With their small size, minnows require very little to survive and thrive. Fathead Minnows live near the middle or bottom of the water column, while Golden Shiners swim a bit higher in the water column. All minnow species spawn quickly and produce large numbers, making them easy to grow as a food source for predators. We highly recommend stocking a combination of the two species to ensure a well-rounded bait population.
